What is Your First Paper Trade?
Practice with virtual money until your process is boring and repeatable — then risk a single real dollar.
Definition
Paper trading (also called demo or simulated trading) is placing trades with virtual money on a broker's simulator using live prices. It lets you learn order entry, test a strategy, and build discipline with zero financial risk. The goal is not to "win" the demo — it is to repeat one written process until it is automatic and boring.
Why it matters for trading
- It separates "do I understand the mechanics" from "do I have an edge" from "can I follow my rules" — three different skills you do not want to learn with real money at once.
- It exposes your psychology cheaply: you will still feel the urge to oversize and revenge-trade on a demo, and that is exactly the muscle to train before money is real.
- Most account blow-ups happen in the first months — a few hundred logged demo trades is the cheapest tuition you will ever pay.
